Teaching your child how to swim(Backstroke)
If you haven’t read page one of this hub series you can find it HERE!
Page one discusses beginning steps a parent should take and will help you find which article you should be concentrating on depending on how experienced your child is.
SWIMMING STROKE( Beginning Backstroke)
Back stroke is another simple stroke that you can beginning teaching your child after they have mastered freestyle. Before thinking of teaching your child this stroke, your child must have mastered the exercises that were learned on this PAGE and this PAGE.
Important things to correct in this lesson
· Make sure your child is always kicking his/her feet
· Make sure your child is always looking at the ceiling when performing this stroke.
· Be sure to stay around your child while they are not comfortable swimming on their back, if nobody is their they tend to try to look behind them in fear of hitting someone. You really want them to be able to since when they are approaching a wall and feel confident they will feel it with their hands first.
Equipment Used in this Lesson Includes
- · Boogey Board
- · Goggles
Important things to perfect with your child’s arm motions.
· Each arm should have a thumbs out out, twisting pinkie in the water, palm outwards and push through your stroke.
· Thumbs out, whichever hand is coming out of the water should leave with its thumb out and palm facing your child.
· The hand should twist during the rotation and hit the water with palms out and the pinkie first.
· Under water with palms out your child should push through the stroke
At the beginning of the lesson you are going to want to have your child extend his/her arms with the bottom of the boogey board in their hand, lay on their back and just use their feet to paddle from one side of the pool to the next. We first introduced this drill and the drills working up to it here!
After your child swims back and forth from each side of the pool for about five minutes you are going to take the boogey board away and tell him/her to perform the same drill on their back without the boogey board, but keeping their arms extended above their head.
After five minutes of the above drill, you are going to teach your child the above tips on arm rotations (Thumb out, Pinkie in, palms out and Push through) have your child try it with one arm extended on the boogey board while the other one performs the motion, repeat with the other arm.
Be sure to emphasize the importance of kicking in this drill as well as every drill we perform in this guide. After your child is able to successfully perform the drill with each individual arm you may tell him/her to switch hands back and forth while keeping the backboard extended behind their head. This may seem tricky at first but it will help them begin learning to float at the top(they really don’t use the backboard much at this point).
Now that they have perfected this technique you may remove the backboard and perfect the backstroke. Certain things to focus on with backstroke are:
· Make sure your child is always kicking
· Make sure your child is always staring at the ceiling
· Arms should consistently be moving with the (thumb out, Pinkie in, palms out and push through motion)
After your child has finally perfected what you consider enough of a Backstroke you can move on to
BREAST STROKE HERE (Coming Soon)
Or perfect
Please do not confuse your children with all three of the strokes at once.
Thank you for reading this Hub series, I hope it results in saving money and lives.
